But really what is the difference between the two and why it’s good to use both.

Your average netbook cases are generally styled like backpacks or briefcases.  They usually have straps that sling over one or both shoulders, and they can carry other accessories, in addition to your netbook.  They are meant for transporting and protecting your netbook.

A netbook sleeve case isn’t meant for transporting the netbook as much as it is for protecting it.  Sleeves are generally meant to keep the computer from being scratched, dented, or cracked.  They’re usually padded, and protect the computer against damage.

Netbook Sleeves vs Netbook Cases

Some sleeves do come with shoulder straps, but most aren’t meant to carry your netbook  or iPad to and from work or school.  Sleeves are generally used as extra protection for a computer inside a standard netbook case.  Since many netbook cases don’t have a lot of extra padding, these sleeves can offer some additional buffer against bumps.  They also help prevent scratches and dings in the computer itself that may be caused by other items inside the case bumping against the computer.

Another great benefit of using a netbook sleeve is that you can actually carry your notebook without a standard  case.  If you’re a student, you can place your netbook inside your backpack along with your books, or carry it in a stack with your other supplies.  If you’re a business professional, you can put your notebook inside your briefcase with your other work materials as long as it’s protected by the sleeve.

These sleeves aren’t just for protecting the notebook or iPad, either.  They’re stylish and interesting, and can go a long way to making your laptop look more attractive.  If you buy a netbook that is in a color you’re not fond of, you can always change the look by simply getting a sleeve in a color you do like ( a netbook skin can also help change the look of your laptop).

Sleeves come in many different materials, colors, and patterns.  You can get a sleeve with your favorite sports team logo, your favorite band’s logo, or a pattern you really like.  You’ll find hearts, stars, kittens, teddy bears, skulls, basketballs… almost anything you can think of!  Some companies will even customize a laptop sleeve for you, using a graphic or photo you provide.

You could get a picture of your kids, your girlfriend, or even your dog printed on the sleeve.

Many netbook and iPad sleeves are custom made to fit a particular notebook model.  They are cut to fit the exact dimensions of the netbook, which makes them fit perfectly.  If you are not thrilled with the styles available for your particular netbook, you can always purchase a sleeve by size. For example: a sleeve for a 10.1 inch netbook or a 13 inch.

You can also get general sleeves that can stretch to fit almost any laptop of a particular size, but they won’t fit perfectly.  You may have your sleeve slip off occasionally, but it should fit pretty well for the most part if you choose the right size.  They’re usually very stretchy, so they can stretch to fit most models relatively well.

If you choose to get a sleeve, you’ll probably also want to buy a case.  The sleeve will protect your computer, but it won’t be very useful for transporting the computer unless you put it inside another bag like a large purse, backpack, or duffel bag.  The sleeve will offer additional protection no matter what type of bag you put it in.

If you plan on keeping your notebook in a sleeve over night or for any length of time you should try to allow your netbook to cool so that the heat does not build up inside the sleeve .  Most sleeves allow your notebook to cool off quickly but if you get a extra heavy weight one or if it is made of neoprene, it can trap the heat in for quite a while and like regular computer, excess heat can take its toll.

• The first thing to think about is your budget. There is no sense looking at leather netbook bags if your budget can’t handle it. You should be happy to know though, that netbook bags and sleeves are relatively inexpensive and even top of the line ones are still affordable.
• How will you be using your sleeve or case? Will you be riding a bike or walking to work or school? If so then you may want to look at weather resistant bags that will protect your netbook against the elements.
• Do you want a backpack style bag or one that converts to a backpack from handled case? Some of the newer netbook bags are convertible so you can use them several different ways. This is always a nice option.
• Is there a certain type of material that you are looking for or looking to stay away from? Netbook bags and cases come in so many different materials and you can almost certainly find the type you are looking for.
• If you are looking for a sleeve and a case, why not purchase them at the same time so that you can ones that match.
• What will you be a carrying in addition to your netbook? If you are planning on carrying a few books, your iPod, a battery pack, a make up case etc. be sure to get a bag or case that either has extra pockets on the outside for your gear or you should look at purchasing a bag or sleeve that is one size larger.
• What size is your netbook? If you have a 10.5 inch netbook there is no sense looking at 10″ cases or sleeves. This is especially true if you are purchasing it as a gift.  Always know the exact size.

Netbook Sleeves and Netbook Cases

Do you take your netbook everywhere you go? I do.
